Bubbles and Hearts

“People always say that, when you love someone, nothing in the world matters. But that’s not true, is it? You know, and I know, that when you love someone, everything in the world matters a little bit more.”
Jodi Picoult, Handle with Care

Tree House Restaurant!

Okay So I was Googling tree houses because that's what I do with my free time apparently.. and I came across this tree house restaurant, The Redwoods, in Auckland, New Zealand. How AWESOME is it?! It was designed by Pacific Environments Architects and is almost 10 meters wide and over 12 meters high. The seating is split level and can seat 30 people seated or hold 50 people for standing room parties. I wonder if it would be reasonable to fly halfway around the world just for dinner?

Food Inc.

Okay, I'm obsessing, I'll admit it. Last night I had to watch the documentary Food Inc. for my environmental class and it's literally all I've been talking about since. I blabbed my Mom and Dad's ears off, I called Max and made him listen to me for 45 minutes, I made a new friend at lunch today and then immediately started discussing the film with him. I told pretty much every person I ran into to watch it and everyone that said they had already seen it I responded with the quickest, "Oh my gahh what did you think?!?!" Just like that, straight Valley Girl.

I think the reason I am so obsessed with it is that it was not what I was expecting. I am already a vegetarian and didn't really want to sit and watch animal's being tortured for an hour and a half, I know that happens and I am already doing my part to not support it. But this movie isn't just about the inhumane practices, but is truly about the corruption that has been taking place in the food industry that no one seems to care about.

I don't want to tell you everything that happens, but I have a few key points.

1. I'm pretty sure McDonald's has enough power that if the CEO wanted to destroy the world he could. I wish I was a good writer because I am pretty much already creating the plot to a Vonnegut-esque novel in my head that I think could be pretty successful.
2. Unhealthy food needs high taxes, end of story.
3. I think EVERYONE should start to buy ORGANIC food. I already pretty much only eat organic, ruling out the Boulder salads I have in between classes. If the people demand it, they will get it. If you build it, they will come. Not a good reference, never mind. It's expensive now, but if it becomes the norm the prices will drop. IT IS WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY.
4. The revolving door of CEO's that head the FDA is sickening. Democrats can preach about their disapproval of big business, but everyone knows what is happening in Washington and it needs to be stopped. The food industry may be the biggest business of them all and it is run by a handful of companies that are controlling our lives whether you want to become aware of it or not.
5. As Americans we are consumers, and we're picky consumers. We need the best of the best. We return clothes when they don't flatter our bodies, we complain when we think we are being cheated or deceived in any good we buy. But, when it comes to food we turn a blind eye. The food we eat is probably the most intimate good we consume and yet no one ever questions where it comes from. We have completely enabled the food industry to get away with everything that they have done.

Vogue Masquerade Party

Oh my goodness. I cannot even begin to handle my obsession with these photos. The things I would do to be able to go to something even slightly similar to this. Diane von Furstenberg's mask! She's amazing, everyone looks beautiful...uggghhh.

Brown Betty Cupcakes

I stumbled across photographer Laura Novak's lovely photographs of Brown Betty cupcakes. I am completely obsessed with those cupcake stands! I have never seen cupcake stands before, I need them! Brown Betty is a family business located in Philly and after perusing the website I decided that I need to force Lauren to go there and give them a try, I don't think it will take much forcing. Two words: dessert boutique, brilliant.

check out Laura Novak's blog for more lovely photographs.

When life gives you lemons, listen to Talking Heads

Psycho Killer
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa better

Never doubt the power of Talking Heads to turn any moment into a party. Some of my favorite times ever have involved watching Stop Making Sense in Sam's basement or dancing to Talking Heads with Anna and Carter..

And I'll never forget the amazingness in seeing David Byrne at Bonnaroo '09, tied with Bon Iver in my personal rankings of the top performances that year.

Haugen/Zohar Arkitekter -- Fireplace

The best things in life are from Scandinavia, end of story. Now, I don't really understand why this is considered to be a "fireplace for children" because frankly I wouldn't trust a child in there, but I would certainly love one for myself.

I think it's amazing. Check out the article for more details here..

In Other News...

I will finally invest in a faux fur coat this year.
To keep me extra sassy during the winter months.

Wind Energy = Copenhagen, Wind Energy = US ?

I am currently taking an Environmental Ethics course and I enjoy doing my homework for it way more than any college student should. Last week we had to read a bunch of current events articles and one of them was on an offshore wind line that has received great financial backing from Google and other sources. I even tweeted about it, nerdy.

After living in Denmark surrounded by windmills I cannot think of one con that outweighs the abundance of pros. Not even the noise. And the proposed US wind line will supposedly be far enough out that noise will not be an issue. After busing from Copenhagen to Ã…lborg in the dead of winter with only fog and snow to look at for hours, I even found the sight of windmills to be calming. The proposed US line will run down the coast of New Jersey through Delaware, honestly who cares about their view anyway (Sorry Snooki).

By 2030 Denmark plans to satisfy 50% of its electricity needs by means of wind energy. The US needs to stop worrying so much about monetary costs, because the environmental costs will soon outweigh them if they don't stop dilly-daddling around ideas without commitment. Ideas like this need to be put into effect.

Busy Bee

So here I am at the library on a Thursday night. I started this blog and I've been way too busy to post already. This weekend isn't looking too great either as I have a paper due Monday and a project due Tuesday. I wish my To-Do list resembled the one above (thank you Patrick Star), but instead it is filling multiple pages of my Moleskine and has gotten to the point where I am running out of colors to color coordinate with. I thought Senior year was supposed to be fun?!

More to come.

P.S. Blogging has given me yet another reason to love the library, this is the perfect setting.

So here we go...

I started with a blogspot and soon discovered the immediacy of Tumblr and so I converted. But, these days I'm sick of belonging to a community of fifteen year old girls, so I am back again. Let's hope this relationship lasts.

Now, the age old question: How will I get people to follow my blog? I can force Max and Anna to check it, yippie two followers. I think it all has to do with content, so let me make some promises.

I promise to:

1.) Share new and old music, awesome music.
2.) My pictures will be pretty, and credited.
3.) I will try my hardest to create a place to find inspiration
4.) I will not focus strictly on my life
5.) I will keep you up to date on environmental problems, solutions and most importantly the beauty of nature.
6.) I will share all great things I find: outfits, movies, bands, photos, videos, articles, books, people, recipes.

A promise to myself:

In the end I will find and try many new things in order to have the pleasure of sharing life with others.
